The Who
With the current push for self-care has come to a totally refreshing wave of authenticity. It makes sense, right? Taking care of yourself is also about being true to who you are and what you love. We’re seeing it celebrated all over the place. Yes, even in (especially in) photography. Who you bring to the table should shine through at your photo session. At Fusion, we’re all about that.
If you don’t want a photo that looks like everyone else’s, don’t show up like everyone else. When you look at a photo of yourself you should be recognizable not just because, well, it’s you looking at you, but also because your energy has been captured. There are a few different steps to help ensure a session that aligns with who you are.
The What
Props and outfits help set the scene but they’re there to serve you and your session. Choose props that highlight the things you love and that mean the most to you. Bring outfits that make you feel fabulous but that also make you feel the most at home with yourself. Doing a boudoir session? Don’t be afraid to get creative - authenticity is sexy so show up for yourself when you show up to the shoot.
Scrolling through your social media feeds, you’ll probably notice some repetition in the professional photos being posted and that’s, in part, due to the fact that photography is not immune to trends. And trends aren’t automatically a negative but how can we take something trendy and put your unique spin on it? For example, more and more people are including their pups in their photo sessions which can be a lot of fun because they bring a different (crazier) energy and that allows you to get on their wild level. Kids do the same thing. It’s about letting loose and enjoying your session as an experience. And we think the best experiences allow you to celebrate who you are and what (and who) you love. So it’s fine if your dog isn’t winning any awards for most obedient – what happens when a squirrel pops down from a nearby tree? We’re going to find out so let’s enjoy the moment and get some photos that are definitely not the same old thing.
The Where
Location matters. If you aren’t a huge fan of flowers, don’t pick a Charlotte garden as your backdrop. There isn’t really a right or wrong answer when it comes to location as long as it makes sense for you. Let’s find a spot that captures a piece of who you are and what you enjoy. Did you and your fiancé meet at one of Charlotte’s many breweries? Let’s start there and then let’s find the spots around this crazy city that mean the most to you. Or maybe you met in Raleigh but you’re always running off to Asheville for the weekend – you’re not confined to Raleigh. Let’s hit the road and make the day an adventure. Our team has recommendations and we love working with you to pick the right place but you and your loved ones know your history and we want to incorporate that.
Every city has iconic photo spots but we want to help you break outside that box. We don’t begrudge you the classic Eiffel Tower shot or holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa with your pinkie but take your selfies there and let us set the scene somewhere that makes you feel the most comfortable in your skin.
The Why
Good photography tells a story. It isn’t just about freezing a moment in time. When you look at your family photo, your engagement or wedding album, your boudoir session…you want to see more than familiar faces reflected back. From start to finish, a great story includes the who, what, when, where, and why.
We can’t stress enough – you are a kick-ass individual and it serves absolutely no one to have you water yourself down before you step in front of the camera. Be loud! We’re sure as hell gonna be. You tell us when, and we’ll be there to help you tell your story.
