Celebrating the Love of Family with a North Carolina Mountain Wedding

We're going to take a quick pause on the wedding planning series to feature Kyla and Ryan wedding photography in Asheville NC. It's funny how life works - sometimes we meet someone in passing and they turn out to be a bigger part of our story than we ever could have imagined. Kyla and Ryan met at a track meet in elementary school and then reconnected years later as adults.
What were your first impressions?
Ryan: "Ah, hell... I am in trouble." I knew that my life would never be the same without her.
Kyla: "Crap.. why couldn't he be bald and fat?"...something along the lines of..."I am in trouble." I knew immediately I would fall in love with this man and it would change my life forever.
How did the proposal go down?
We spent the day as a family at the circus. Then swung by our new home build site. The kids were running all over the place hyper and crazy. (They were in on it) Suddenly they all took off running to the car laughing like hyenas.. so I laughing said "Whelp looks like they are done..." and started walking to the car. Ryan made a like strangled painful sound behind me and was down on one knee pretending his back went out. So I turned around to make sure he was ok and walked over to him when he asked me to marry him.
He likes to boast he was quick on his feet thinking to fake the injury to get me to come back.
It was perfect, he proposed on the site in the middle of our will be kitchen, the heart of the home. All of the babies were watching from the car and smiling and so happy.
It was simple, and sweet, and perfect.
As part of our process, we ask about the role photography can play - what kind of story do you want to tell? There isn't a right or wrong answer here - some couples want a lot of photos and a lot of structure to those photos. Kyla and Ryan requested a more laid back approach.
What are some key elements of photography that you love/don't love?
Neither of us particularly like posed pictures very much. We like to capture our personalities, our friends, feelings...
As you progress through the wedding planning process, what are some of your anxiety points?
Not sure we have any anxiety about it all. Just hoping for a small intimate wedding with a lot of fun and unique details. Quality over quantity with our family at the center of it all.
Originally, Kyla and Ryan were planning on a small intimate wedding in Charlotte North Carolina. After consulting with them, it became clear they were extremely unique and were actually looking for something to match their personalities that included more of an adventure type of wedding. So I suggested a few spots in the Blue Ridge Mountains that might suit their photography and wedding plans perfectly, they took a trip up to Asheville and visited several of the spots I recommended for their wedding photography and they ultimately chose Black Balsam, which is incidentally one of my favorite spots in all of NC to take photographs.
We don't have the secret to life hidden in our camera bags (if we did, trust us, we'd share it). But Kyla and Ryan made us feel like maybe they have the secret to life. We had a great time shooting their wedding because we got to be playful with their shots and how amazing is the location? But it was also really sweet to celebrate this family and the love they so clearly share.
