Are you planning an engagement, family, senior portrait or fashion editorial/boudoir photo shoot this year? Have you thought about the location you'd like to this photo shoot to take place at? It's one thing to decide you'd like to move forward with a photo shoot, but it's a whole other task to choose the ideal location. You want the location to match your vibe, your personality, and the personality you'd like to see in the photos at the end. Here are a few tips to help you choose a location for your upcoming engagement pictures, family portraits, senior portraits, boudoir photo shoot, etc:
Tip #1 - Think About the Season
Season is important when it comes to planning a photo shoot. If you're planning the shoot for the winter and live in an area that has unbearable polar vortex temperatures, then you may have to opt for something indoor. If you're wanting to get the session done in the summer or fall, you'll have plenty of outdoor options at your fingertips to choose from. In addition, think about the colors going on during that season and if you want certain natural colors to pop up throughout your photos. You'll find that several families do their portraits in the fall because they want the beautiful colors of fall and the leaves changing to be the backdrop of their photos. It is up to you and the ideal look and feel of your photos.
Tip #2 - Take Your Personality into Account
The point of getting pictures taken is to have memories to look back on for years to come and you want those memories to show off your personality. That being said, when picking your location think about your personality and the personality of whoever else is involved - family, fiance, etc. If you're a city girl and planning a boudoir shoot, collaborate with your photographer on locations throughout a city that may be semi-private. If you and your fiance are into the outdoors and planning your engagement session, do it outdoors in an adventurous location - waterfalls, rivers, and mountains are perfect for this. Some of my favorite family portraits were done in the comfort of their backyard as there are so many memories already packed into that space. Essentially, think about your likes and dislikes and infuse that with the location you choose. This is a sure fire way to ensure your awesome personality shines through because you'll be passionate about and in love with the location.
Tip #3 - Make Sure You're Comfortable
This may seem like a no-brainer, but make sure you are COMFORTABLE in the location you choose. For example, if you are super shy in front of the camera as well as around other people, do not choose a bustling city or a really busy beach. Your shyness will show up in the photos and are you really going to enjoy the photo shoot if you are worried about people seeing you posing? Fusion Photography coaches you through letting loose and getting in your groove, but if you're already naturally uncomfortable with the setting, it will be hard to get you to a confident place. This is especially important with boudoir photo shoots. We are happy to find some semi-private locations within cities or in the mountains, but would you be more comfortable in a totally private location such as your own home or a studio? These are things that you should take into consideration when choosing your location.
Tip #4 - Ask Your Photographer for Guidance
As a photographer, Fusion has been around the block a few times. We know the ins and outs of Charlotte, NC and the surrounding areas. We are constantly on the look out for new and unique photo shoot locations and at times, we will even "trespass" to get the good shot. That being said, ask your photographer for guidance when choosing a location! Tell them the look you're going for, the setting you'd be comfortable in, and the personality you want to infuse and bam - they should be able to provide a list of options and give input. Working with your photographer should be a collaboration and this should be just another piece of the process.
