How they met
We met at a New Year's party - somewhere I did not want to be, did not know anyone and dragged my friend to rescue me from there so we could go out. The party was at this nice condo uptown which ended up being Steve's condo. After my friend asked him 20,000 questions about his personal life and career goals, she introduced us formally. The rest is history!
Jenn - He was wearing suspenders, I guess as part of his dressed up attire for New Year's. Clearly, he's good looking and I was more attracted to him because I could tell he had his life together with his own place and a good job. I remember him being funny as I had a lot of fun and laughed while we talked all night. I have to admit the next morning I wasn't sure if it was the liquor talking, but when he called me the next day asking to go on a date, I knew I was one of the lucky ones that met a nice guy.
Steve - She's attractive, fun (dancing/singing to Steve Miller Band playing on a boombox she found in the bathroom), and awesome (liked video games). I also thought she was curious (i.e., a snoop) as she was taking inventory of my closet when I first met her).
We went to Cantina 1511 (Mexican on Dilworth). Not that good, to be honest. Later we found out we both weren't overly impressed with it because we both are sticklers for good Mexican food. I also learned he took me there because not liking Mexican food is somewhat of a deal breaker for Steve. He picked me up at my place, met my dog for a second, then took me out to dinner.
When did you know?
Jenn - I honestly can't remember, but I feel like it was early on. It was everything about him, and me not really disliking any one quality about him and it used to be easy for me to find the negative. He always brings out the best in me. Steve has always been funny, kind, generous, outgoing, sweet, attentive and thoughtful. One defining moment probably has to be with my dog. It was hard for me to leave Link at home whenever I'd go hang out with Steve and eventually he had Link come over. Steve took on his own relationship with Link and anyone that has dogs knows that they are like your kids. That was a really big deal for me early on.
Steve - I don't remember the exact moment, nor do I think there really was an exact moment, but it started to dawn on me that everything in my life was better with Jenn. I didn't like doing anything without her whether it was going on adventures, traveling, staying in on a Friday night, going out with friends, everything is better with Jenn. I wanted all of my experiences to be with her. I realized she made me happier in everything I did.
Jenn - I had a feeling if it was going to happen any time soon, it was going to be New Year's because it was always a big day for us. I remember being bummed we weren't "going out" but obviously I got it right after that. I couldn't even tell you what he said, I doubt he knows either. I remember his nan was so over the top excited and it was so precious. She kept yelling at Fred to get the good champagne. Not a person knew - that I know of - was a complete surprise.
Steve - Jenn and I met on NYE 2012, and so NYE has always been a special day for us. I decided to propose on NYE around friends and family, but in private, shortly after the ball dropped this past NYE.
We used Charlotte North Carolina as the backdrop for their engagement photos. First starting at Independence Park in Elizabeth section of town. I started here, because I try and give everyone a unique perspective and had not photographed engagement sessions here in over a year and at night, the park has a great city view of Charlotte for a fantastic cityscape engagement photo that they requested.
We also used one of my favorite parking decks over near CPCC, which incidentally is now closed - not because of us, however - you know I have to put that disclaimer in.
I spent 5 whole days with these lovebirds and their family at the Royalton Resort in Riviera Maya - which is absolutely spectacular. We went cave diving, snorkeling, toured Tulum, oh and we had a wedding :)
I first met Jen and Steve at the studio a little over a year ago. They were nervous and charming, but the one thing that really stuck out to me - they never stopped holding hands. I like that about the couples that I photograph. They were also polite and not just to me but to each other. We briefly discussed some of the options they were looking for, originally they contacted me because they wanted engagement photographs in and around Charlotte. The more we chatted and connected, I realized they also wanted a wedding photographer but did not realize that I photographed destination weddings all over the world.
