Figuring out what to wear for an engagement photoshoot, or any photoshoot for that matter, is hard...ESPECIALLY if you're a guy. At first it may seem simple - guys will go into their closet and pull out the easiest and comfiest items to throw on. They'll then show these things to their fiance and it will be a hard no and next thing you know, you're back to the drawing board with no idea of where to start. To make it a little easier on you fellas, here's a quick style guide for your engagement photoshoot based on my experience as an engagement photographer.
Crisp White Tee - Vneck or Crew: This is one of those basic items that you just need to have. It doesn't necessarily mean you're going to do just a jeans and white tee look, but it does mean you'll have layering options for a button-down or sweater. Also, if you want to go super casual, then you have that option too. I'm always down for a white tee, dark jean, and cool boot look.
Your Favorite Button-Down: I guess you can consider this a basic or "need to have" too. Bring along your favorite button-down (make sure it isn't too pattern heavy though). At the shoot, this button down can be dressed up or down or layered according to the look, location, and weather. Keep in mind this could be your favorite flannel too.
Pull-Over Sweater: Now if you're in the desert and it's over 100 degrees, a pull over sweater probably isn't necessary, but it's another good basic to bring along for engagement pictures. This is another that can be dressed down, dressed up, or layered. It could also be worn alone with your favorite pair of jeans. What I love about sweaters is that they teeter on the edge of casual and dressy so there's a lot to play with outfit-wise when you bring one.
Another Tee or Long Sleeve of Your Color Choice: Always good to have options, right? I recommend bringing along another tee or long sleeve in a color that you love or feel looks good on you. These work well for more casual shots that depict you in your element and how you live your everyday life.
Blazer: I know some guys love a good blazer and if this is you, then I say bring it along! A blazer is totally appropriate for an engagement shoot depending on your vibe and location. They are versatile and a sure-fire way to dress up some of the pictures.
Your Favorite Pair of Jeans: This is a must. Every guy typically has their favorite pair of jeans that fit them well, are super comfortable and that they just feel bad ass in. If you have this pair of jeans, then they will be perfect for the shoot because you know you already feel good in them. I'd recommend these pair of jeans be of a darker wash if possible - dark denim or black - but if not, that's okay too. As long as you feel good in them, that's what matters!
Chinos: I love a good pair of chinos as a switch up to jeans for engagement photoshoots. They come in an assortment of colors including khaki, blue, gray, and more and can be dressed down or up. They are perfect for a more basic look with a tee - instead of having a jeans and tee look, it comes off as if you added an element of style with the colored chinos. You look like a dude with style!
Believe it or not, shoes can be kinda tricky. I always say to bring at least two pairs of shoes that fit your overall style and vibe.
Sneakers or Vans: When I say sneakers, I'm not saying throw on your Air Force 1s or running shoes. What I mean by sneakers are the cool ones you can find at Aldo or just basic vans. If you bring a basic pair of sneakers that are or to toned, we'll be able to get them to go with practically any outfit we put together. Like I said though, I'm not talking about your New Balance running shoes here. I'm talking about the hip ones that are almost like a more casual loafer or dress shoe.
Boots: If boots are your thing and they are fitting for the setting/weather, bring them with you! I love a good men's Chelsea or combat boot - I'll turn to Aldo again here - because they add an element of style to virtually any outfit. If you can pull off a Chelsea or combat boot in your engagement photoshoot then the rest of your fit doesn't matter. Just kidding, it still matters, but you know what I mean. If you're not a Chelsea or combat boot guy, but still a boot guy, bring your boots along if you think they'd work.
Dress Shoes: Now I don't recommend that every guy should bring a pair of dress shoes. Again, it goes back to what your style is and what you like, but if dress shoes are who you are then we'll find a way to fit them in. If you wouldn't be caught dead in dress shoes and dread ever having to wear them, then don't bother bringing them because you'll just do everything in your power to not have to wear them anyways. If you bring them though, make sure they match the outfit color choices you're bringing and your belt if you're bringing that too.
See? Picking out outfits for your engagement photoshoot doesn't have to be that hard guys! I find it easier when you pick piece by piece then work on throwing the outfit together. Grab your favorite tee, your favorite jeans, and your favorite shoes and we'll see what we can create with that. There's really no need to even run out and grab new clothes for a shoot like this, just use what you have. And remember - JUST BE YOU! These are your engagement photos to depict who YOU and your fiance are. If you get super dressy in the engagement shoot, but are never like that in real life then everyone will know something is off. Stay true to you when picking out what to wear and you're sure to feel confident which in turn means your pictures will turn out perfectly.
